Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
