Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis predicted his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The apparent and direct reality that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best of Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it mean feigning the most negative of both America and Christianity never occurred; it means both meekness and belief, a mixture that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
