The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
