Administration Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.
Although the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.
A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
